Furniture made once, for one room

We do not keep a catalogue. Every piece that leaves the shop was drawn for a specific room, a specific ceiling height, and a specific person who is going to sit at it every day.

A commission begins with a conversation about the room and the life happening in it — how many people sit down, what the light does in the afternoon, whether the piece needs to survive a household of children. From there we draw, and keep drawing, until the proportions are right on paper.

Then we choose the wood. Not a species from a list, but the actual boards: we lay out the stock, bookmatch the burl, and orient the figure so the grain runs the way your eye wants it to. On a piece like the Louis XIV sideboard, that selection took longer than the joinery.

Construction is traditional where tradition earns its place — mortise and tenon, dovetailed drawers, floating panels that let solid wood move through the seasons without splitting. Finishes are hand-applied and repairable, so the piece can be brought back to life in forty years instead of thrown away.

Custom residential millwork and cabinetry installed through the main floor of a Pacific Northwest home

Carlos and Madera are exceptional in their work product and client services. They were part of the team truly transforming the first floor of my home into a piece of beautiful and liveable art. They were also part of the team creating a spectacular work environment in my office. Carlos is creative and very nice; his work is of the highest quality and within the established budget. He was prompt in responding to questions and always accessible. I recommend him without reservation, and actually encourage you to talk with him about any decorative needs you have!

Carlos is amazing. He not only aims to succeed in making what you mentally 'see' and scribble childlike on paper, he verbalizes ideas and comes up with photos of completed projects for you to view so you both are on the same page prior to the project beginning. The finished result was beyond our expectations.

Common questions

Before you commission

It depends almost entirely on material and complexity — a solid walnut dining table sits in a very different range from a burl-veneered sideboard with a shaped marble top. We give you a written estimate after the design conversation, before any wood is cut, and we work within a stated budget rather than discovering it later.

Absolutely. Most clients arrive with something scribbled on paper or a saved photo. We take that, draw it properly, and show you shop drawings and material samples so you can see the piece before it exists.

We do, for the right piece. Crating and freight are quoted separately. Local delivery and placement within the Puget Sound area is handled by our own team.

Built this way, generations. Solid stock, real joinery and a repairable finish mean the piece can be refinished rather than replaced. That is the entire point of commissioning instead of buying.
